Gum disease is an infection of the structures surrounding the teeth which includes the gums. It is caused by plaque(a whitish substance found on the surface of the teeth). Gum disease also known as periodontal disease is a common reason people lose their teeth.
Indicators of Gum disease
- Swollen gums which bleed.
- Pockets(gaps in between the teeth): this is commonly created by the use of toothpicks.
- Unpleasant taste or bad breath.
- Gums separating from the teeth.
- Loose/shaky teeth.
Who are those at risk of having gum disease
- Those with poor oral hygiene: Not paying enough attention to the cleanliness of your teeth puts you at risk of having gum disease.
- Those who have tightly packed teeth(overcrowded teeth) find it difficult to clean in between the teeth.
- Smokers and tobacco users.
- Those who have poorly controlled diabetes(a chronic condition).
Prevention
- Brush your teeth regularly(twice daily)
- Floss regularly(everyday)
- Go for regular dental check ups.
- If you are diabetic, make sure you visit your physician and use your medication regularly.
- See your dentist as soon as you notice any change in the state of your teeth or gums.
