People tend to attribute tooth loss to old age. The picture many have of an old person is one without teeth. This assumption is not true. In fact, your teeth are meant to be in service throughout your lifetime if you take good care of them.
Aside from the wearing down of the chewing surfaces of an elderly man/woman’s teeth, the teeth should normally be in great shape. This wearing down is said to be due to years of use(chewing).
Those who have conditions like diabetes, heart disease and stroke need to pay more attention to the care of their teeth as they have a greater risk of developing gum disease leading to tooth loss.
How to prevent Tooth loss in old age
- Brush with a fluoride containing toothpaste twice daily.
- Clean in between your teeth by flossing daily.
- Change your toothbrush regularly(every 3 months)
- Schedule regular dental appointments.
- Quit smoking.
- Avoid habits such as chewing bone/ice, opening bottle tops with your teeth.
Note: If you lose any of your teeth, never mind, you can always get a replacement.
