Tooth loss can occur due to diverse reasons. Some individuals lose teeth following domestic falls, road traffic accidents or sport injuries while others lose theirs spontaneously as a result of severe gum disease. In some cases, the teeth may be pulled out by the dentist following irreversible damage as a result of tooth decay. Teeth that get missing for any reason need to be replaced for the following reasons;
1. To prevent dental anarchy: The common saying ‘Nature abhors a vacuum’ also applies when it comes to the arrangement of our teeth. In the event of tooth loss, other teeth on the dental arch will attempt to close that space. Adjacent teeth will attempt to move sideways and opposing teeth will attempt to grow into these spaces. Having a replacement will ensure that these unwanted movements are prevented.
2. To improve aesthetics in the case of lost front teeth
3. To enhance chewing efficiency in the case of lost back teeth
4. Missing teeth in children may affect the expected normal sequential eruption of permanent teeth and ultimately disrupt normal teeth arrangement and occlusion
Replacement options for missing teeth
Various options exist for the replacement of missing teeth. These options differ in the materials they are the made from, mode of use, and cost.
1. Removable Partial and Full Dentures: These are the most affordable means of teeth replacement. They can be made from acrylic (a material that can mimic the color of the normal oral mucosa) and metal. They would need to be removed daily before bed and maintained by daily cleaning with mild soap and a soft toothbrush. Dentures can replace a few teeth or even the full dentition. Some dentures can even be modified to be flexible to give a more comfortable feel in the mouth.
2. Bridge: A bridge is a type of prosthesis that carries the replaced tooth as well as other crowns that serve as a support/abutment for the replacement crown. Bridges can be supported by an implant or an adjacent tooth.
3. Dental implants: These are a permanent form of replacement in which the replaced tooth is secured in place by a screw fixed into the bone. This is the costliest option as it exactly simulates the presence of the actual tooth and does not require removal or cementing.
In conclusion, there are no perfect replacements for teeth and the best way to ensure optimal oral health is to maintain your teeth by having regular dental checkups to ensure that dental diseases are caught in time to prevent tooth loss. There is a world of difference between the natural teeth and its man made replacements.
